Imagine the scene. Your salon is set to receive a celebrity client in about one hour. The salon owner has pulled some strings and worked angles with this celebrity’s team so that they visit your salon on their short trip to South Africa.
You’ve been chosen to be the stylist assigned to the client, so it’s a big day. Naturally, you are nervous, but the salon owner believes you’re the right person so you’re going to give it your best shot. Just before the client arrives you decide to grab a bagel and some coffee so you’re in the right head space.
As you walk in from your lunch break, you notice the client is in the salon so you walk confidently towards them. But something’s wrong. One of your colleagues spots it as you walk past her towards the celebrity client. What she knows that you don’t, is that there’s cream cheese on your face.
Of course, your teammate is torn. Does she interrupt your session and embarrass you in front of the client or does she just wait and hope you see it?
You’re so focused on doing your best that you stay fully engaged with the client and don’t even glance up at the mirror to see the cream cheese gently perched on your chin. How embarrassing! If only you knew!
Let's be honest, we are all just doing the best we can in life aren’t we? We often miss the small things in the way we come across or communicate or present ourselves, that, if slightly adjusted, could vastly improve our interactions and relationships with those around us. These are the things the cream cheese represents.
So how do we deal with having ‘cream cheese’ on our faces and not knowing it?
Well, there are a few lessons about self-awareness that we can learn from this scenario.
1. It happens to us all.
All of us have things about ourselves that we are not aware of, and, if we could become aware of them, it would empower us to make small adjustments that could benefit us and who we are in the world.
2. It detracts from the best parts of us.
We have these wonderful and incredible strengths in our characters and personality and having cream cheese on your face can work to detract from those being the most obvious things about us.
3. We need to look in the mirror.
If we can spend some time looking at ourselves we will often be able to avoid those cream cheese moments.
4. We need others to help us see.
Sometimes there isn’t a mirror around or, if you are like most people, the mirror you would use to look at who you are as a person is quite distorted with negativity or defense mechanisms that will prevent you from seeing the cream cheese because it is too painful to look at.
5. It's just a dye stain.
It is not that you ARE the cream cheese. It's not that the cream cheese defines who you are. It's just a small thing that by being aware of it, you can make a small change that will allow your other wonderful strengths to shine through.
How empowered would you feel if you were aware of the things holding you back and were able to make small changes daily to be a better professional and a better person?
