Thomas Hill, Director of TH1 Hair, Predicts the Hottest Hues and Hairstyle Trends for Springs/Summer 2022.
REBEL YELL
At TH1 Hair we’ve had a huge influx of clients rebelling against playing things safe when it comes to their hair, which I believe is a reaction to the confines and restrictions of the last two years. With this in mind, I believe the forthcoming season will be the perfect blank canvas for those looking to stand out from the crowd. Unafraid and unapologetic, rebel cuts will take many forms, in both cut and colour, but I think we’ll see clients looking to add a bit of ‘wow’ factor and look at me appeal to low fuss, low maintenance buzz cuts (which were seen across the S/S22 runways at shows including Chanel Couture and Alexander McQueen). Case in point? Shaved hair with a pop of added colour interest and daring dye designs. Think a burst of colour placement, as pictured in my Craft collection (left) or a flash of bold detail, as seen in my Indistinguishable collection (right). These both set the sartorial tone for the forthcoming season and are perfect ways to help those clients looking for that little bit ‘extra’.
CURVE APPEAL
The Octopus trend has really been gaining legs recently (no pun intended…) and is a trend I see as being a huge hair hit this spring/summer 2022. Named as such because the silhouette rounds with the head shape (similar to an octopus’s body) with the base length resembling the legs, Pinterest declared it the haircut that will be ‘one of the most requested styles at the salon by Gen Z in 2022’ so it’s one to perfect to ensure you’re one step ahead. Seen with a 70s twist at shows including Ulla Johnson this season, what I love about this style is that while it bears similar characteristics to the shag haircut (albeit with a little more length), it also boasts a blend of layers (both long and short) and texture within its slightly longer silhouette. This is something I’m a huge fan of, and it’s a look I created in this image (left) as well as in my Indistinguishable collection (right). The best bit about this style is that it can be created on any hair type, from straight to wavy, and I love the curved finish it creates. This isn’t a look for time-poor clients, however; it’s not a low maintenance style. It requires volume at the roots and a rounded shape to the mid-sections, so advise your clients on how best to perfect it at home with a volume spray to help maximise the root area and a medium round brush for the perfect blow-dry. Advise on a shine spray to finish for some summer- and sea-inspired style.
YOU GO CURL!
This season I predict a return to natural-born texture with big curls taking centre stage once more. Big hair reigned supreme on the seasonal S/S22 shows, most notably at Fendi, Hermes and Lacoste, showcasing wonderfully wild curls with a rock ’n roll finish (as pictured in my About a Girl collection, right, and my Indistinguishable collection, left. The definition is key, which can be achieved with the right cocktail of products to ignite some lioness-inspired volume and effortless, stand-out style, but it’s also important to keep locks in shape: curls should look effortless and natural but require the right cut, and canvas, as a starting point. The beauty of this trend is that styling is a breeze: advise clients to twist a curl-defining cream into damp locks to prevent frizz and add some definition, either air drying or using a diffuser for some volume and texture; a roaring success on every level!
PERI NICE!
Very Peri (17-3938) – PANTONE’s colour for 2022 – is a shade I can really get on board with, its ‘back to the fuchsia’ appeal boasting carefree confidence for the new possibilities the forthcoming season offers. Blue isn’t a hair colour for the faint-hearted, but it can be used as light or as dark as you dare, for some serious ‘out with the old and in with the blue’ appeal. it’s very soft and wearable, and after such extended periods of isolation for many, I predict that experimentation with hair colour will be huge this forthcoming season, with Very Peri helping clients find newfound confidence. Nose grazing pastel wigs illustrated this trend perfectly at Loewe’s S/S22 show, and its versatility is found in both darker and lighter tones. Brunettes will look bolder with Very Peri highlights, or bolder colour placement (as pictured in my Wink collection, right), and if clients have been embracing their natural greys, this tantalising tone will help to add some ‘wow’ factor to their colour, as pictured in my Wink collection (right). I also adore a very pale aqua blue and I’m a huge fan of hair imitating art: think hair colour painted in Cubism-inspired abstract sections to create illusional locks. Using hair as if it were a canvas, the end result can be remarkably subtle, serving to enhance the natural shine, every time.
