Modern Hair & Beauty, distributors of Reuzel in Southern Africa, is pleased to announce Renaldo da Silva, owner of Clipper Club barbershops, Reuzel Scumbassador for South Africa. His path to this role has been remarkable, and he is eager to share his experience.
Renaldo's journey started with a competition where participants submitted a 6-minute video demonstrating their favourite Reuzel classic cut and products. Renaldo was selected as one of the winners, earning a trip to Rotterdam, Netherlands, for the Reuzel Scumbassadors training. After 15 years in the hair industry, this opportunity was a significant milestone.
With his luggage packed, passport renewed, and brand new Reuzel x Kyone Clipper** in hand, Renaldo set off for a transformative experience. The prospect of meeting and learning from some of the best barbers and hairstylists from around the world was thrilling.
Upon arriving in the Netherlands, Renaldo travelled from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Rotterdam, home of The Old Barber Academy and birthplace of the Reuzel brand.
The training kicked off with an introduction to the existing and candidate Scumbassadors, as well as the educators who would guide them through the week of training. This was followed by a showcase of four classic cuts and in-depth product knowledge, setting a high standard for the training ahead.
The Reuzel cutting system proved to be both efficient and comprehensive. Renaldo and his fellow trainees learned a 10-step method for completing haircuts, emphasising systems, guidelines, and industry-specific terminology. Each day involved setting up mannequins, observing haircut demonstrations, and practicing these techniques under the watchful eyes of five expert educators. The training covered every haircut in the Reuzel classic collection along with some exciting new styles yet to be unveiled.
A standout moment of the week was an exhibition by industry legends Rob and Leen, founders of Reuzel. Their expertise, insights, and closely guarded secrets were invaluable, providing Renaldo with knowledge he plans to integrate into his own techniques.
The most significant lessons Renaldo took away from this experience were the importance of zones and references, the overall design of a haircut, and precise navigation techniques – all essential for creating great haircuts. The camaraderie with fellow stylists from over 15 countries added to the richness of the experience, fostering a global exchange of ideas, techniques, and industry stories.
“This trip has inspired me to develop the industry even more in South Africa, to spread the knowledge I have gained and to share my story with everyone,” says Renaldo. “We sometimes compare our industry to the industry internationally and we should, because we have the quality and dedication that allows us to become proud barbers and hairstylists of excellence."
