Best Balayage Technique
2022 Winner: Jadie Herbst - Jadie Professionals
Jadie used a fabulous combination of her favourite products with her model client Christie, and a careful and strategic use of her airtouch foils with babylights, teasylights and shadow roots.

Technique:
Step 1 - From the occipital bone upwards I did full head Airtouch foils, leaving out all the hair under the occipital bone. I left out thick sections in between each airtouched foil for extra negative space/dimension.
Closer to the crown area I did a few teasylight slices.
• from occipital bone towards crown area all foils were placed horizontally
• from ear to top of the head foils were placed diagonally forward
• half a cm on either side of her middle part were left out for later to paint
• money piece was foiled in a triangular section alternating slices and babylights.
• her entire hairline in the front was also babylights for a uniformed look when hair is pulled back or up.
- Formula Products - Blondor Multi Blonde Powder + Welloxon Perfect
Step 2 - After my Airtouch foils were done processing I rinsed and freehand painted with Freelights for maximum brightness towards the ends of her hair.
- Formula Products - Freelights Powder + Freelights Developer
Step 3 - Shadow Root. The Airtouch allowed for a really good blend, and I wanted to preserve as much of my model’s natural hair as possible for low maintenance, so I only tapped out the roots where necessary.
- Formula Products - 5/97 Colour Touch + Colour Touch Developer
Step 4 - I applied my toner while the shadow root was on and blended them together.
- Formula Products - 10/93 + 10/96 + 10/36 Illumina + Welloxon Perfect

Best Gent’s Creative Cut
2022 Winner: Erin Friend - Collab Hair
Erin had a wonderful time creating the most spectacular look for model client Jay!

Technique:
On this awesome haircut I used my wonderful client Jay.
To create this look I first went in all over with my Wahl Bellina clipper and number 2 guard.
We then did the colour with Schwarzkopf professional products.
Once the colour was completed, I then went in with my Wahl detailer clipper creating a whirlwind of patterns all over his head. It was super fun to create!

Best Damage Fix-up Before and After
2022 Winner: Jade Kruger - Fabiano Hair
Jade’s client model Claire came to her devastated at the look of her hair – let’s see how Jade saved the day!

Technique:
My client Claire came in with her hair feeling brittle and dull.
I had just started using L'Oréal Metal Detox and explained to her how the protocol will change her hair's integrity and give her the shine and feel that she has lost.
• Applied Metal Detox spray
• I started off with full head foils with Blondstudio 8 + 20vol and wellaplex
• once finished the foils I used 9.12 L'Oréal Dialight + 9vol in between the foils
• Processed
• Rinsed and applied N2 wellaplex
• Rinsed and toned with L'Oréal Dialight + 6vol for 10 min from applying Shampoo Metal Detox and then applied Metal Detox Care liquid followed by Metal Detox mask
• Before drying, I applied L'Oreal Absolute Repair 10-1 spray
• Used Curl Ever After spray
• Finishing product L'Oréal Mythic Oil

Best Makeover Before and After
2022 Winner: Alexia Chrysafis - Fox and Davidson Hair Design
Alexia’s model client gave her full carte blanche for this makeover, but only limited her to keep the “grow out” low maintenance.

Technique:
I used Schwarzkopf new inspired Pantone colours,in a “colour-blocking” technique. The lighter sections were pre-lightened first to add vibrancy.
A total of 5 colours were used to achieve this end result.
I then cut and styled her hair using inspired trending styles like the “shag” and “curtain bangs”. This makeover took a full day to complete.

And for 2022, our judges were so impressed with her work that a specialty award went to Irene da Fonseca!
Best Damage Fix-Up Category for Curly Hair
2022 Winner: Irene da Fonseca from The Zhoosh Cut
Irene’s model client Shaskia had dry hair that was damaged from colour and mechanical processes. Shaskia is a model, so her hair takes regular abuse for shoots and is often heat styled and the stylists use products that glue her hair down for their specific creative briefs.
Product build-up was weighing down her naturally curly hair and split ends left the shape flat and frizzy.

Technique:
• I first began with a curl cut and reshape to remove dead sections and split ends and added some curly lights for depth using Schwarzkopf clay lightener. The hair was toned with Schwarzkopf Vibrance 6-12 Dark Blonde Cendre Ash, followed by Loreal Metal Detox to remove any build-up of colour, product and natural metals from products and the water.
• Thereafter, I used a curly hair shampoo and conditioner from Rezo Haircare and a Keune moisture and nutrition elixir to restore the hair's natural moisture and add shine, locking in the moisture that she pushed back into the hair at the basin, using the curl squishing technique.
• Squish to Condish is a technique for adding extra moisture to curly hair by pushing more water into the cuticles of the hair. The principle behind this technique is simple: water and conditioner are the best things for getting moisture into your curls. The right combination of these two ingredients will make sure you don't over-moisturize your hair but still allow it to retain enough moisture to look and feel hydrated – without becoming weighed down, greasy, or suffocated by product.
We hope this fantastic review of the 2022 Hairnews Awards Winners will help you get motivated and creative!
