An Overview of the Bargaining Council’s Role

The Bargaining Council was formed to achieve peace, stability and standards in the Hairdressing, Cosmetology, Beauty and Skincare Industry in South Africa.

The role of a National Bargaining Council is defined by the Labour Relations Act (LRA) and consists primarily of facilitating agreements between Trade Union/s and employer organisation/s.

If you’re an employer, salon owner, legal owner, rent-a-chair or employee in this industry, we exist to be of service to you, in much the same way that your professional purpose is to provide excellent service to the clients visiting your businesses.

We are here to promote collective bargaining in your industry, the conclusion and enforcement of collective agreements, the prevention of disputes (or if they can’t be prevented, a speedy dispute resolution process)

The Council provides a forum in which discussions and negotiations can take place, and collective agreements can be formulated. Once such an agreement has been reached, our role also includes the fair and impartial enforcement of the agreed terms of conditions of employment.

We look forward to being of continued service, in a climate of mutual respect and understanding between employees and employers, and to doing our best to ensure that the current excellent labour relations in this industry are maintained. We will strive to continuously improve the services we provide.
