Nadine Brits, recruitment manager for The Onboard Spa South Africa, explains more about what will happen during your interview, and what the timeline of events is likely to be before you embark on the adventure of a lifetime, working as an on board hairstylist on a luxury cruise liner.Embarking on a career at sea is the adventure of a lifetime, but what happens after you complete your nine month contract on board ship? Here are some career options that are available to you.
Q: What qualifications must a hairstylist have to be successfully placed on board?
A: We accept level 3 and level 4, ITEC, VTCT, CITY AND GUILDS or SETA, and we also accept the Trade qualification. The trade qualification however is not a requirement.
Q: How does the interview work?
A: The first part of the interview happens in a group setting, which starts off with me doing a full presentation on the company and job description. This is followed by each applicant doing a 5 minute introduction of themselves and telling us about their career so far, as well as their future goals.
Q: What does the next part of the interview include?
A: The practical part of the interview follows, where they will do a gents and a female hair cut, followed by 2 blow dries. My focus as a recruitment manager is on how employable the applicant is in terms of their skill and their customer care.
Q: What happens after a hairstylist passes the interview?
A: Once an interview is passed, the applicants are then able to choose a suitable date to join the company training which takes place at our academy in Cape Town. The duration of the training is 10 days. And receiving the placement on your first ship can happen any time from one day after training to three weeks after training.
Then you head off to sea for an unforgettable experience where you will travel the world, make lifetime friends, and earn tax-free income while doing the job you love!
