While down in Cape Town, Hairnews had the privilege of meeting the oldest barber in the Bokaap, working at the famous Tonsorial Hair Design in Wale Street.
Yusuf is 71 years old – although he looks much younger – and has a lifetime of experience as he started barbering when he was just 14. He loves barbering, considers it to be therapy and his calling, and works a full Saturday in the salon, keeping up with the other hairstylists client for client, even though he is more than twice their age. As well as an older clientele who have been with him for decades, Yusuf also has a young clientele, and has styled generations of clients in the dedicated barbering section at Tonsorial Hair Design, the fabulous, Paul Mitchell signature salon where he is based.
