Yvonne Bryson – Gold Medal Winner – Creative Colorist
Q: Why did you enter the Color Zoom Challenge 2019?
A: I enter competitions to learn. I love taking an idea and trying to make it my own. I enjoy playing with new techniques, colours, and trying to figure out how to place them to suit the look as well as the model/client. By doing competitions, I find we have more Carte Blanche to use a new technique or colour. It can take long to perfect it, but when a client walks in your door, you can then confidently use it on her, whether it is used commercially or in a modern form.
Q: How did you interpret the “Remix” theme to create your unique look?
A: I did not want to copy any one of the styles in the collection, but rather use them all. I was lucky to find a model who was prepared to do anything. So, because I had no limitations with my model, I decided to re-mix the entire “Remix Collection” and create an all-in-one look. I kept my colours subtly blending, but placed them in contrast to one another. I most probably used 50% of the techniques I know on one head, making sure that one specific colour pops here and there.
Q: What did you enjoy most about creating your competition entry?
A: The challenge, most definitely! I think I cut her hair three times before I was satisfied. I also changed one or two colour choices along the way. Sometimes, as you work with the colour, you realize that it will not compliment the direction of the cut. That’s when you put your tools down, and create another colour into your collection in order to compliment your cut. This is something that you can’t do in the salon because of time constraints, budgets and wastage. Even the cutting takes longer. However, when a client comes in that needs something different than usual, you feel confident, because you’ve practiced on a live model for at least two days.
Q: How do you feel about heading overseas to represent South Africa at Global Zoom in Austria?
A: I am absolutely thrilled to go to Vienna! Nervous, excited and every other emotion that comes with something exciting as this. I will practice and do my utmost to re create this look to the best of my ability, in the time frame that I have. We are so fortunate to have Goldwell SA get us colour ready and trained before we go.

Q: Why did you enter Color Zoom Challenge?
A I entered Color Zoom because it's such a wonderful opportunity to see the world and connect with a global hairdressing community. Most of all it’s such a wonderful opportunity to have fun.
Q: How did you interpret the “Remix” theme to create your unique look?
A: I took inspiration from the cheeky 80's pop punk element of the collection by pairing a classic cut and remixing it with super vibrant colours with an optical pop using clashing colours.
Q: What did you enjoy most about creating your competition entry?
A: The competition almost didn't happen at all. A week before my shoot day I was out of budget and without a model. Everything was working against me. I reached a point where I surrendered ownership of the situation and asked God to guide me in the direction he wants for my life. The very next day my amazing photographer helped me find a model and wasn't in the least concerned about the finances. A few days later the three of us, me, model and photographer, met each other for the first time and that was the day we did our shoot. I believe that this whole creative process was a supernatural act of God and none of it was in my power. The most satisfying thing is seeing how it all came together and how much fun we had creating it.
Q: How do you feel about heading overseas to represent South Africa at Global Zoom in Austria?
A: I am feeling super excited. Having the privilege of competing in Color Zoom twice before globally, I am very excited to see all the friends I have made in previous years, and I can't wait to represent my Goldwell South Africa family back home with pride and honour.

Q: Why did you enter Color Zoom Challenge?
A: I entered Color Zoom because I love the "OUT THERE" creativeness that Goldwell appreciates. I have never entered an international hair competition before . So this was a way of pushing myself to see if my work and skills are compatible with the best in South Africa.
Q: How did you interpret the “Remix” theme to create your unique look?
A: I went back in time... thought of a style that was once a fashion statement and REMIXED it into the now.
Q: What did you enjoy most about creating your competition entry?
A: What I enjoyed most ..... was the whole experience, from going out choosing fabric for my models outfit, to the colouring and cutting of the "artwork" hairstyle. And last but not least the amazing day spent with the photographer where the amazing photo shoot took place. From start to end it was a memorable experience. It taught me to never give up and never underestimate myself. If you try hard enough you can be the best at anything.

Q: Why did you enter Color Zoom Challenge?
A: This is my second time entering Color Zoom. I love challenging myself to improve in my craft as hair stylist and exploring my creativity. Fashion shoots are my passion as well as collaborating with others to create beautiful art.
Q: How did you interpret the “Remix” theme to create your unique look?
A: For me the “Remix” collection was all about mixing different genres and using bright bold colours. I wanted to create a “never done before” look by using different textures, clashing colours and combining them with elements of past and present trends infused with futuristic features.
Q: What did you enjoy most about creating your competition entry?
A: I really enjoyed working with my model’s beautiful afro hair. I just love how the texture of the hair allows you to mould it into amazing shapes.

Q: Why did you enter Color Zoom Challenge?
A: This year was truly a last minute decision for me to enter. I was only planning on mentoring my team for the competition, but a few weeks before I got a little FOMO (fear of missing out). I wanted to be an inspiration for my team. I also felt that it would be a great idea to take the challenge as a team.
Q: How did you interpret the “Remix” theme to create your unique look?
A: I have been obsessed with mustard tones lately and decided to work that into the remix trend. I wanted to play around with a shine line technique and colour merging. I tried working with the negative and create the shine with darker tones on a lighter base.
Q: What did you enjoy most about creating your competition entry?
A: I truly enjoyed my model this year. I was so inspired by her look and quirky mannerisms. She had an extremely dark base to start out with. I enjoyed the colour journey to work with her particular hair texture. The photo shoot is always my favourite when all the hard work has come together. I love the energy of the day when the make-up, wardrobe and hair comes together.

Q: Why did you enter Color Zoom Challenge?
A: I entered Goldwell Colorzoom to turn my imagination into reality and to create something different that you can't always achieve in your everyday salon life, to push my own boundaries and creativity.
Q: How did you interpret the “Remix” theme to create your unique look?
A: I've always been infatuated by the 60's, 70's, 80's era. The colour inspiration stemmed from the unique tones of pink and lavender pearls. I wanted to create MY version of this Remix collection using different colours.
Q: What did you enjoy most about creating your competition entry?
A: The best part for me was to see how the ideas in my head and on paper eventually became reality. I really enjoyed to see how my model (who is my sister), came to life during the photo shoot.
