The past weekend we experienced it all: the glitz, glam, celebrities and influencers, fashion - and, of course HAIR! AFI, together with Wella Professionals and MAC Cosmetics, showcased some of South Africa’s best established and up-and-coming designers.

Day 1 of Fashion Week kicked off with an AFI Masterclass. Here guests were introduced to multiple panels discussing various topics within the fashion industry and on the African continent. Topics included Sustainability, Creativity through Diversity and Preserving African Heritage. Guest speaker Albert Read - Managing Director from Conde Nast in Britain -, also gave his input on fashion, where the industry is heading, and the importance and influence of print media on the industry.

Day 2 featured emerging fashion designers and artists in our culturally-rich industry at Xperience AFI (AFI). The event was aimed at emerging millennial talent and market. The inspiring designs from NotGood.Enough and Artclub & Friends were complemented by music from young rappers, bands and DJ’s. The night ended off with a performance from The Voice SA coach and celebrated South African rapper, Riky Rick.

The AFI Gala dinner was attended by all the ‘who’s who’ of South Africa and important partners for this year’s AFI Fashion Week. The guests were treated to a delicious dinner at Groot Constantia and fashion shows from Marianne Fassler, David Tlale, Gavin Rajah and Taibo Bacar. This evening was the official opening of the Cape Town Fashion Week!

The AFICTFW cocktail opening was followed by three sittings – as the Quiteria & George show had been cancelled by unforeseen events. AFI Privè (SA) and Ruff Tung (SA) opened the night’s activities with their spectacular designs respectively.

MaXhosa By Laduma (SA) showed what the brand is capable of in a powerful runway show full of vibrant colours, prints and culture.

Doreen Mashika, from Tanzania, was the only international designer for Friday night. The designs were interesting and intricate: mixed prints and materials, feathers, and the looks were completed with sleek low ponytails, styled by Wella Professionals and EIMI. Neville Masondo closed the show with a luxurious, detailed bridal show influenced by African heritage, executed with precision and incredible detail.

Day 2 did not disappoint either. AFI Fastrack presented three talented newly-graduated designers’ runway shows. South African fashion icon, Jackie Burger, even took to the stage! Hair was one of the focal points in Aphia Sakyi (Ghana) and Loayo Art’s (Morocco) fashion shows. Not only did their designs reflect their countries and cultures, but the hairstyles chosen for these two shows really stole the show.

Other favourite shows (and hair!) were those of Shana and Stefania Morland and Warrick Gautier. From fresh, flirty and youthful looks in Shana Morland and Stefania Morland’s shows – to intense, haute couture looks from Warrick Gautier, this year’s AFICTFW was incredibly executed: hair to toe!

A special thank you goes out to the Wella Professionals stylists who gave their time and skill to make sure each designer’s look was perfectly enhanced.
