Ryan Bush to Teach Carlton Hair Academy Barbering Course

Exciting news... master stylist and Carlton Hair Creative Team member Ryan Bush from Carlton Hair Canal Walk will be teaching the barbering course. Here's more about Ryan, and his experience and passion for the craft of barbering.

My passion for hairdressing started when I was still in school in Port Elizabeth. I would cut my own hair, and my friends' hair in high school. I was actually planning on becoming a chef, until I was asked to be a model for my wife, Christilene Bush, for a competition. I was blown away by the creativity. Needless to say, I found my calling and won first place!

I qualified in hairdressing in Port Elizabeth in 2003 at the Port Elizabeth College, and furthered my studies in London at the Sanrizz academy.

I worked for another 2 years at Sanrizz, and from there I worked on cruise ships for 4 years.

I came back to South Africa and opened my salon, Headcandy, in 2010, which became part of Carlton Hair in 2015.

Last year my wife and I packed up and moved to Cape Town to further our work with Carlton Hair. In 2018, we made our stage debut at the Davines Hair on Stage in Bangkok. Since then, we were invited again for the Davines Hair on Stage show in Amsterdam. Being on the creative team has been a dream come true. To be able to push my creative expressions is something I couldn't live without. To be alongside the best in the world whilst preforming your creative expressions is, to say the least, priceless.

Last year I got the opportunity to travel to London for a 5-day course with Menspire in which we studied men's fashion, structure of haircuts and fading in depth. Josh Lamonaca is the head of the creative division of Menspire. They were awarded the best for barber education and are pioneering the barbering world. The British barber for me are leading the industry forward. I love the hairdressing skills applied with barbering - strength with shape. The biggest thing I love about men's hair is the attention to detail - the beauty of perfecting every cut.

In terms of new trends for men's hair, we are seeing a lot of textured looks coming through. Not only fades but longer looks. Texture being the key!

I look forward to sharing my skills and passion with the first intake of barbers at the Carlton Hair Academy in July! Sign up asap as places are limited.
